Posted on: January 30, 2011

Kangaroo care is a method of having skin to skin contact with and infant, usually premature.  Kangaroo care was discovered in Columbia in the 1970s to increase the survival rate of premature infants. During this procedure an infant, wearing only a diaper and a hat, is held to the mother or father’s bare chest. It has been proven through research that the temperature of the mother’s chest will adjust to the infants need. For instance increasing in temperature if the infant’s body temperature is too low. There are many benefits to the infant resulting from kangaroo care. Some of these benefits include: improved breathing rate, heart rate stabilization, gain in sleep time, more rapid weight gain, and less crying. Not only does kangaroo care benefit the infant, but it also benefits the infant’s parents.  Some benefits to the parents from kangaroo care include: increased bonding and closeness with the infant, and confidence in the ability to care for their infant. In most cases as soon as kangaroo care begins the infant will fall asleep. Kangaroo care a highly beneficial and effective. Kangaroo care can be started as soon as the doctor gives the okay to do so.
